My Thoughts...
I am not too sure what to say about this book. I gave it 3 stars on Goodreads, I would probably lean closer to 2.5 stars, but it wasn't a terrible read by any means. I was completely drawn in by the cover, that's why I wanted to read it originally. It was a super quick read, I finished it in a couple of hours.
The story starts out with an older Frank re-visiting the area 7 years after the events of the book took place. It's kind of odd because I don't believe we ever go back to the older Frank once the story is over, but it's been a couple weeks since I read it so I could be wrong. In the story Frank is just out of High School, and trying to get out of a home where he believes that his mother doesn't really care about him. He is a kid who's just sick and tired of being put in the middle of his divorced parent's issues and he wants to get away from it all. He takes a summer job on the beach in a town several hours away from home. He is to do maintenance and renovation on a small beach house owned by a local business owner.
Over the course of the summer he meets and falls in love with a mysterious girl who is from another country. She and her family live in a house that is just up the beach. They are surrounded by a cloud of secrecy and suspicion and Frank really never does learn the true story behind why they are here in the United States.
Overall, I felt like the story had a lot of potential that it didn't quite live up to. The characters weren't as fully developed as they could have been. I think that the story was rushed and at times just didn't make a whole lot of sense. I think this would have been a much better story if it had been bulked up a bit and made into a full size novel.
