Review | FALLING FOR JUNE by Ryan Winfield

Falling for June by Ryan Winfield
Adult Contemporary Romance Published June 30, 2015
Atria Publishing
Author's Website  |   Goodreads  |  Buy the Book on Amazon

Synopsis from Goodreads:

Elliot Champ, a charming but solitary bachelor who has sworn off romance, is closer than ever to realizing his childhood dream of moving to Miami—until a chance letter lands on his desk, and changes everything.

The letter takes him to Echo Glen, a secluded retreat outside of Seattle, where he meets David Hadley, an elderly man who needs Elliot’s help fulfilling a promise to his wife, June. But along the way, it is Elliot whose life will be changed, as he’s introduced to a cast of colorful characters who conspire to draw him ever deeper into a whimsical world, where falling in love is all about letting go.

From the green mountains of the great Pacific Northwest to the scarlet poppy fields of northern Spain, this unique and heart-wrenching love story will take you on an emotional journey to that ever-elusive place called true love. Another must-read romance from Ryan Winfield that is guaranteed to draw tears, put a smile on your face, and have you, too, falling for June.
My Thoughts...
This book was such a refreshing read.  It's a romance, but more than anything this is a story of how friendship can form in the unlikeliest of situations.  In Elliot's case he meets David at a time in his life when he is at a crossroads and his relationship with David is what will determine the course that the rest of his life will take.

Elliot is a man who, from a very early age, was turned against the idea of love. His mother left him with his father when he was only three years old and his father never quite recovered from the heartbreak.  He dates, but he's determined that love isn't something he will ever need in his life.  He's never seen this modeled in his life so he thinks his life will be just fine without it.  Elliot works for a company that buys out mortgages on home properties that are struggling to stay afloat.  One day a letter comes across his desk and while it intrigues him, he's passes it on to be picked up by someone else in the office.  On his 33rd birthday he can't seem to get the letter out of his head so he digs it out and decides to pay the man a visit.  It turns out to be the best decision he ever made.
"I think sometimes life lines up to give you exactly what it is you really need, and on my thirty-third birthday that's exactly what happened to me."
Elliot meets Mr. Hadley and over the course of a couple of days his life changes.  David tells him the story of June and how they met and fell in love.  His story is compelling and has the power to change how Elliot feels about love.  Elliot may have fallen for June, but I definitely fell for David.  He's in his early 50's when he initially meets June who becomes the love of his life.  She changes his life in such an amazing way and David does the same for Elliot as he's relaying his love story with June to him during their visits.

There is a thread of a love story going on in the present with Elliot and Estrella, but it's not the driving force of the novel and it doesn't really happen until David makes Elliot believe that a true and lasting love is possible.
"Find yourself someone worthy of your love, and love her with all you've got.  It's the only thing that's worth a damn in this life."
I have never read The Notebook, but I did see the movie years ago and this reminds me a little of that for some reason.  I think it's the dual story that's happening and the fact that the major love story happening is the one that is already coming to an end in the present.  I freely admit that there was some sobbing going on even after I had a feeling what the end was going to bring.  I was finishing the book on a break at school and I had to put it down a couple of times so I could compose myself.

While I still think that Jane's Melody is my favorite of Ryan's books, this is most definitely a close second.  I will say this again and again, but it's always true, there is such a lyrical quality to the writing and there are lines that you just have to highlight because you don't want to forget them.  This is a beautiful story with characters that you will absolutely fall in love with.  They have grand adventures complete with skydiving in Spain.  I also happen to know that Ryan Winfield is a big believer in researching what he writes about, so you can be assured that when he describes the skydiving scenes he is doing so from a point of experience.

This is also a clean romance which was kind of unexpected because there are some very sexy love scenes in the Jane's Melody books.  I have to admit, though, that some stories just need to be told in a certain way and I think that adding sex scenes into this particular one would have somehow taken away from David and June's story.  This is a book that I wholeheartedly recommend to anyone who believes in long and lasting love.  If you don't believe...read this book, it may just change your mind.

XOXO, Shelly

Blog Tour | BLACK IRIS by Leah Raeder

Black Iris by Leah Raeder

Atria Books
Author's website  |  Goodreads

Synopsis from Goodreads

It only took one moment of weakness for Laney Keating’s world to fall apart. One stupid gesture for a hopeless crush. Then the rumors began. Slut, they called her. Queer. Psycho. Mentally ill, messed up, so messed up even her own mother decided she wasn't worth sticking around for.

If Laney could erase that whole year, she would. College is her chance to start with a clean slate.

She's not looking for new friends, but they find her: charming, handsome Armin, the only guy patient enough to work through her thorny defenses—and fiery, filterless Blythe, the bad girl and partner in crime who has thorns of her own.

But Laney knows nothing good ever lasts. When a ghost from her past resurfaces—the bully who broke her down completely—she decides it's time to live up to her own legend. And Armin and Blythe are going to help.

Which was the plan all along.

Because the rumors are true. Every single one. And Laney is going to show them just how true.

She's going to show them all.
My Thoughts...
As with my review of Leah Raeder's last book Unteachable, I am going to keep this review rather short.  Partially because this book wasn't my favorite and partially because it's hard to review without giving too much away.  As I stated in my other review I think that her writing is fantastic, but with this book it got a little mixed up in an abundance of pop culture references, quoted poetry and a somewhat convoluted story line.  I gave this 3 stars on Goodreads and that last star is because I do like the way she writes...for the most part.

Blog Tour | WHEN I'M GONE by Abbi Glines

When I'm Gone by Abbi Glines
Adult Romance published December 2, 2014
Atria Books
Author's website  |  Goodreads

Synopsis from Goodreads:

From #1 New York Times bestselling author Abbi Glines comes the next new adult novel in the Rosemary Beach series, in which we meet Mase, a Texas heartthrob first introduced in Take a Chance who comes to Rosemary Beach to stir things up.

I had an urge to fix all her problems. Which was stupid. She was doing fine without me. But something about those big eyes…

Mase Colt-Manning has always preferred his humble life as a Texas rancher to his birthright as the son of a legendary rock star. In fact, he rarely visits his father’s rarefied world in Rosemary Beach, especially if it means bunking at his vile half-sister Nan’s house—until one visit leads to a chance encounter with a young, gorgeous house maid who awakens him with her off-key but spirited imitation of a country music star…
Reese Ellis finally has her freedom. After escaping a lifetime of abuse from her parents and classmates for an undiagnosed learning disorder, she seizes the opportunity to be a house maid to some of the richest families in Rosemary Beach. But her job is in jeopardy when she causes an accident at the home of her most important client, Nan Dillon. When a hot, half-naked stranger with a cowboy’s swagger comes to her rescue, she’s intrigued—then afraid once he shows his own interest. Reese has never met a trustworthy man in her life. Will Mase be any different?..

my thoughts...

I finished this book at nearly midnight last night.  I pretty much read it in one sitting as it's a fairly quick read.  I have been waiting for a book featuring Mase since she was first introduced into the series and I did enjoy this one quite a bit.  I think that Mase is a strong and very masculine character, but that's probably because he's a cowboy.

Blog Tour | CONFESS by Colleen Hoover

Author's website  |  Goodreads  |  Buy the Book on Amazon

Synopsis from Goodreads

From #1 New York Times bestselling author Colleen Hoover, a new novel about risking everything for love—and finding your heart somewhere between the truth and lies.

Auburn Reed has her entire life mapped out. Her goals are in sight and there’s no room for mistakes. But when she walks into a Dallas art studio in search of a job, she doesn’t expect to find a deep attraction to the enigmatic artist who works there, Owen Gentry.

For once, Auburn takes a risk and puts her heart in control, only to discover Owen is keeping major secrets from coming out. The magnitude of his past threatens to destroy everything important to Auburn, and the only way to get her life back on track is to cut Owen out of it.

The last thing Owen wants is to lose Auburn, but he can’t seem to convince her that truth is sometimes as subjective as art. All he would have to do to save their relationship is confess. But in this case, the confession could be much more destructive than the actual sin…

My Thoughts...
I have to start out this review by saying that I love Colleen Hoover's writing and so far I have loved all her books immensely.  I was so excited to get the ARC of this book (even though it wasn't a print copy), the cover is beautiful and fitting, but I do feel like the blurb is a little misleading.  More specifically, the last line of the blurb is misleading, but I will get into that with my review.  I ended up giving this book a 3.5 star rating, which I always round up on Goodreads, but I think it's important to point out that it's not a full 4 star rating.  I didn't, however, feel the need to give it the lower rating of 3 stars.

There is always something unique about each of Colleen's books and this one is no exception.  In fact, I think that with the addition of the artwork she's stepped up her game.  However, my ARC version for kindle didn't include the artwork so it's hard for me to say with certainty.  I am a little annoyed that all of the early ebook reviewers got shortchanged when the artwork does seem to be a good part of the story.  Such is the reality when reviewing from an ARC copy I guess.

There isn't much I can say about the plot of the story with out spoiling it so I'm not going to go into any great detail there.  The whole beginning of the novel is really vague as well.  We know that Auburn has just recently moved to Texas, but we don't know why.  She needs more money than she is currently making at her job as a hairdresser, but we don't know why.  We do know that she doesn't particularly care for her job though, which is odd because she's so young she would have just recently graduated from beauty school.  Another vague part of the beginning.  She's walking home, thinking about how she needs a 2nd job when she sees a Help Wanted sign in the window of a building she walks by every day.  This happens to be an Art Studio owned by the other main character Owen.  Owen is an artist who paints anonymous confessions and he makes a very good living doing so.  He only needs her to work a couple hours one night a month and he pays really well, so Auburn can't pass that up.

There is a bit of unbelievable "love at first sight" here, but at the same time they are both a little hesitant.  They both have a lot of secrets holding them back.  Here is where I had problems with this story.... Auburn was super hard for me to connect with because she doesn't stand up for herself.  She thinks that she has to bend to what other people want or she won't get the one thing she wants most.  She's doing everything to please others, when what she really needs to do is take control over her own life.  I did like Owen, I just felt like his character could have been developed a little better.  With regards to that last line of the blurb, it's almost like that was written before the book was written and then she forgot to make sure it was true to the actual plot.  It sounds amazing on paper, but in reality it's a let down when you find out what his "secrets" really are.

I think that the whole story was too rushed and when the climax/resolution happens it's just kind of hurried and done behind the scenes.  Suddenly, she finds her backbone, but we never see that happen, it just happens and then the book is over.  There are all these loose ends that just disappear and suddenly it's all resolved.  There are people in the story who need to have consequences for the actions they take, but instead it's all just dismissed and I don't think this bodes well for the overall feel of the story.  It left me with an uneasy feeling in the end.

This is a New Adult novel so there are some love scenes, although they are as heavily descriptive as the ones in her last novel Ugly Love.  There is also some profanity, but not really more than a couple of words.  If you are a fan of this genre then I would say that this is probably a book you will want to read, especially if you are a fan of Colleen's.

XOXO, Shelly

Blog Tour Review | "You Were Mine" by Abbi Glines

You Were Mine by Abbi Glines
Adult Romance published December 2, 2014
Atria Books
Author's website  |  Goodreads

Synopsis from Goodreads:

From #1 "New York Times "bestselling author Abbi Glines comes a brand-new Rosemary Beach novel about Tripp Newark and his hidden romantic past with Bethy Lowry.

In the eyes of the wealthy playboys who frequent Kerrington Country Club in Rosemary Beach, Tripp Newark is a hero. Under pressure from his parents to become a lawyer and lead a conservative, upper-class life, Tripp disappeared from town five years ago to travel the world, forfeiting the opportunity to inherit millions. Yet few know what he was really running from...

Bethy Lowry was unraveling long before her boyfriend drowned in a riptide trying to save her after she'd had one too many drinks--again. A trailer park kid working as a cart girl among the wealthy patrons of Kerrington Country Club, Bethy has always been impressionable. But five years ago, before she earned her reputation as a hard-drinking, easy girl, she had spent a single summer with Tripp Newark that changed her life forever...

My Thoughts...

So, I just can't quit this series!  They are quick reads and I just can't help myself.  Plus, this one is about Tripp and I have liked him from the beginning, even though I never did go back and read Woods and Della's last book.  Now that I have gotten this far, I don't really feel the need to read that one.  I mean in all fairness I know that Jace died and this book does have some details about that so I felt like what questions I did have were answered.

So, I am not going to talk about the plot  too much.  Basically this book is a deeper look into how Bethy and Tripp met originally and what happened between them that summer 8 years ago.  We all know that Tripp left to get away from the expectations that were placed upon him by his parents.  In this book we find out how Bethy played into that.  Bethy came from a completely different background than Tripp and the other men of Rosemary Beach, but she's not so different than the other women.  She and Blaire are so close because they have so much in common.  She's just finally learning to live again and it's thanks in part to Tripp even if she doesn't realize it at the time.  When they all go away for Della and Woods' wedding things take a turn in their relationship even though she's not sure she's ready for it.  She still has a lot of hurt and misunderstanding about what happened between them so long ago.  There are things that neither of them know that once revealed will go along way to ease the pain they have both felt for so long.

I did enjoy this book, probably more than the last couple in the series.  I don't know if their story is done quite yet, you just never know with this series!  I do like how we get to see into the lives of the other couples in each book.  It's nice to see the direction all their lives are going in.  I know this won't be the last we see of Tripp and Bethy though.  I think it's about time for Mace to get a book, in fact that may be the next one and I'm looking forward to that one!

This is an adult series so there are a lot of steamy and very descriptive love scenes in this book just like in all the others in this series.  I do always feel the need to add this disclaimer though!

XOXO, Shelly

Blog Tour | "After the Rain" by Renee Carlino

After the Rain by Renee Carlino
Contemporary Romance published November 11, 2014
Atria
Author's website  |  Goodreads  |  Buy the Book on Amazon

Synopsis from Goodreads:

From the USA TODAY bestselling author of Sweet Thing and Nowhere But Here comes a deeply emotional contemporary romance about the second chances waiting beyond the shattered dreams of youth.

Under the bright arena lights of a rodeo show, young Avelina Belo falls for a handsome cowboy with a larger-than-life personality. After a whirlwind courtship, she happily moves away from her family in northern California and settles into married life with her cowboy on a seven-thousand-acre cattle ranch in Montana. One freak accident later, Avelina’s hopes for the future come to an end.

Nate Myers graduated from UCLA medical school at the top of his class, ready to follow in the footsteps of his father, a superstar cardiothoracic surgeon. Six years later, Nate’s career is being ruined by a malpractice suit. Questioning himself for the first time, he retreats to a Montana cattle ranch to visit his uncle and gain perspective. There, he meets a beautiful young woman named Avelina who teaches him more than he ever knew about matters of the heart.
My Thoughts...
Oh my goodness, I loved this book so much!  I think it was my favorite Renee Carlino book and Nate was definitely my favorite of all her characters. There were times that I was upset and wanted to put it down, there were times that I teared up, but I ended up reading most of it in one sitting.  That is one thing about these books that Renee Carlino writes, once I start reading I generally don't stop until I get to the end of the book.

This is a story about loss and learning to let go and love again.  Avelina is only 17 year old when she meets Jake, she marries him after 3 months, and a year and a half later she is a widow.  Nate is a young heart surgeon who loses a young patient and is facing a lawsuit.  He takes some time off and heads to where is uncle lives on a ranch in Montana.  He meets Avelina and his life will never be the same.  She's been withdrawn and blaming herself for the last 5 years.  She lives and works on the ranch still, but her life is empty and has no meaning anymore.  They slowly start to get to know each other and he is able to bring Ava out of the dark place she's been hiding for the last 5 years.  Things aren't easy for them, but Nate is determined to make it work.  He sees what they could have and he's not going to let her get away easily once he's had a taste.

I loved the character development in this story, there is a fair amount of the book that passes before we get to the place where they meet finally.  This is necessary, though and it didn't bother me.  They each have something dark they are dealing with and we have to know this in order to understand them fully.  There were times that I was frustrated with Ava, but I think that Nate was very mature in the way he handled her and the situation she was in.  I liked that he was always honest with her even when he knew that being honest may lead to her leaving.

I didn't care so much for one section toward the end of the book, I realize why it needed to be done, in theory. It made me ache for Nate, but I loved seeing how he dealt with it and that made me love him even more.  I also didn't care much for the epilogue chapter, it was a little out of the blue, unlike the one in Sweet Thing.  I would much rather have seen that play out just like the rest of the story instead of getting that outside view.

Overall, I loved it.  It was heart breaking and hopeful all at the same times.  A little like getting your heart ripped out and put back together all in the space of a few hours.  It is a romance so there are some steamy love scenes, but they are all tastefully done and not at all crass or vulgar.  I highly recommend it to all you romance lovers out there.

XOXO, Shelly

Review | "Unteachable" by Leah Raeder

Unteachable by Leah Raeder
New Adult Romance published March 24, 2014
Atria Books
Author's website  |  Goodreads  |  Buy the Book on Amazon

Synopsis from Goodreads

Maise O’Malley just turned eighteen, but she’s felt like a grown-up her entire life. The summer before senior year, she has plans: get into a great film school, convince her mom to go into rehab, and absolutely do not, under any circumstances, screw up her own future.

But life has a way of throwing her plans into free-fall.

When Maise meets Evan at a carnival one night, their chemistry is immediate, intense, and short-lived. Which is exactly how she likes it: no strings. But afterward, she can’t get Evan out of her head. He’s taught her that a hookup can be something more. It can be an unexpected connection with someone who truly understands her. Someone who sees beyond her bravado to the scared but strong girl inside.

That someone turns out to be her new film class teacher, Mr. Evan Wilke.

Maise and Evan resolve to keep their hands off each other, but the attraction is too much to bear. Together, they’re real and genuine; apart, they’re just actors playing their parts for everyone else. And their masks are slipping. People start to notice. Rumors fly. When the truth comes to light in a shocking way, they may learn they were just playing parts for each other, too.

Smart, sexy, and provocative, Unteachable is about what happens when a love story goes off-script.
My Thoughts...
I am going to keep this review pretty short.  The reason being that I still have no idea how to really review this book.  I finished it yesterday and I have mixed feelings about it for sure.  On one hand the writing is really beautiful.  Leah Raeder has a wonderful way with words, there is no doubt about that.  On the other hand, while I like a well done teacher/student romance, this one was a little weird for me.

For me, personally, there are ways to handle this type of relationship without it being yucky.  She hit it right with them meeting before, similar to Slammed and Pretty Little Liars.  The part that bothered me most was his age, he was way too old for me to be comfortable with what they were doing.  I think that maybe if he'd been just out of school or even in his mid 20's, I wouldn't have minded so much.  I was also put off by Maise's attitude and her nasty mouth.  She was very grown up for her age, but her constant swearing was a little much for my.  Maise is technically "of age", but that doesn't matter in most states.

I don't really know how to feel about this story.  There were things that worked and things that were totally weird for me.  I like a good steamy romance novel, to be sure, but there is way more descriptive sex in this book than what was needed and maybe that's why I didn't like it like as much as I thought I would.

So, while I did enjoy the writing style immensely, I did have some iffy feelings about the overall story line.  If you have issues with teacher/student relationships then you will not want to read this book.

XOXO, Shelly

Blog Tour | "All or Nothing" by Kendall Ryan

All or Nothing by Kendall Ryan
New Adult Romance published September 9, 2014
Atria Books
Author's website  |  Goodreads  |  Buy the Book on Amazon

Synopsis from Goodreads

You’ve met Ben Shaw. Now meet Braydon Kincaid, the devil-may-care male model who nearly stole the show in Working It by New York Times bestselling author Kendall Ryan.

As one of the world’s most sought-after male models, Braydon is no stranger to the finer pleasures in life. The last thing he wants to do is limit himself, especially when it comes to women. His best friend, Ben, might’ve settled down, but Braydon doesn’t want to waste his youth on the messy complications of commitment. He wants fun. He wants easy.

Ellie isn’t looking for a casual relationship, but her tough and sassy personality instantly attracts Braydon, who proposes a “friends with benefits” arrangement. Unable to resist the powerful pull of the charming bad boy, Ellie eventually relents, though she longs for all-consuming love.

As the two spend more time together, Ellie soon realizes that Braydon’s posing skills extend off the runway. His carefully crafted façade masks a secret hurt that he’s reluctant to share with Ellie, even as they embark on a passionate affair that sends them hurtling toward a fate neither expected. Can Ellie risk her heart while she waits for Braydon to let her in, or will she be forced to demand all or nothing?
My Thoughts...
When I read Ben and Emmy's last book I was really, really hoping that we would get a book with Braydon and Ellie.  I could tell from the beginning that the chemistry between then was going to be off the charts and this book didn't disappoint.  I think it took me about 3 hours to read this start to finish and I almost managed it in one sitting.  Once I started reading I didn't want to put it down.

So, Braydon and Ellie meet earlier in the series, but this books starts in at Ben and Emmy's wedding.  We all know it was Ellie that Braydon was hooking up with in that bathroom at the wedding!  Even if it wasn't confirmed in the 2nd book, we were hoping....at least I was. So basically this is the start of their "relationship", although I hesitate to call it that for very obvious reasons.  This whole "friends with benefits" scenario seems to be pretty prevalent in a lot of the New Adult books I have read lately and this one is no exception.  They meet, hook up, one of them decides that they don't want a relationship so they are just friends, etc...  Then there is always the one, usually the woman, who agrees because she thinks it will end up turning into something deeper.  That's this book, in a nutshell.  Ellie goes along with it, but starts to develop feelings pretty early on and wants more from Braydon that he is just incapable of giving her.

Braydon is the ultimate bachelor really.  He's hot, a print and commercial model, he's independent and most of all he's not looking to be tied down.  He has issues with commitment as Ellie learns once she starts to fall for him.  He's distant with her and at times just downright annoying.  In time, we learn was his issues are, but there are times throughout the book where I just wanted to punch him in his beautiful face.  He treated Ellie like he was embarrassed to be seen with her and no matter what his reasons were, that just wasn't okay.

This whole book is told from Ellie's POV.  I think it would have been better for this particular story if it had gone back and forth between the two main characters.  I think that insight into Braydon's character would have been really helpful.  I liked him, but I would have empathized with his situation more and not been so mad at him for so much of the book.

I have to say that I saw the little twist coming from a mile away and I think most readers will, but it didn't take away from the story for me.  I did feel like from that point, though the story was a little rushed.  I enjoyed the epilogue from Bray's POV and it was  nice to see Ben and Emmy there as well.  Overall, I really liked the book, maybe even more than Ben and Emmy's story.  This is a New Adult romance so there are some very detailed and extremely sexy love scenes.  If you are looking for a quick, steamy read then I highly recommend this book!

XOXO, Shelly

But a life-changing secret has torn them apart, and now Grant and Harlow must decide if they have enough fight to make it work - or if the pain of betrayal has permanently destroyed their future.
My Thoughts...
If you read my blog regularly then you know that I have become a little disenchanted with the Rosemary Beach series, but I love Grant so I needed to read this part of the series for sure.  For me this book was another 3.5 star book. I almost gave it 3 because it was so predictable, but I gave it the extra .5 for the introduction of Major and he's not even in the book much!

So this book starts out after Harlow has left Grant.  Grant is pretty much devastated, calling her every single night and leaving messages about how much he loves her and can't live without her.  He isn't the same Grant we all know and love.  This Grant is a broken shell of the man he used to be.  He goes to work in the morning, comes home and leaves messages for Harlow...over and over and over again.  He's pretty much neglecting everyone and everything else.  Harlow is in Texas living with Mase in a tiny little house on the back of his parent's property.  His main concern is protecting his little sister who is hurting just as badly as Grant is, bu she's not giving in and she's not listening to the messages that he leaves every night.  She wants to talk to him so badly, but she knows the minute she hears his voice she will cave.  She's protecting herself and the only was she knows how to do this is to keep her distance from the man she loves more than anything.

It's literally impossible to talk about the plot any further without posting spoilers.  I will just let you know some of the things that I did and didn't like.  I loved Mase and Major and I know we haven't seen the last of them.  I loved that there was NO Nan drama in this book.  "What?" you ask, "no Nan drama?  None at all?"  YES!!  It was amazing.  She only made a few quick appearances and amazingly enough she was a decent human being.  I know that I said that I didn't think she was redeemable, but in this book she proved me wrong, just a little.  And we did get into her head for just a moment and it was sad more than anything so all hope for Nan may not be lost quite yet.  We also met Grant's dad in this book and I have to say that I am not impressed with him at all.

I did think that this story was pretty predictable, but it didn't make me not like it.  This was pretty well on par with the rest of the series really.  They are quick reads that don't require any deep thinking.  They are sexy and sometimes emotional. You will love some characters and hate others, but you will keep reading them because they are fun.  They are new adult so there are plenty of steamy love scenes so if you don't care for those you will want to steer clear of this series.

XOXO, Shelly
