Synopsis from Goodreads:

Sylvia Day draws us back into the shadows of a seductive underworld where lycans, vampires and angels vie for supremacy...

Elijah Reynolds is the most dominant of lycans, a rare Alpha whose skill on the hunt is surpassed only by his primal sexuality. When the lycans revolt due to the iron fist of angelic rule, he steps into command, becoming both enemy and coveted ally in the conflict between vampires and angels.

Vashti is the second most powerful vampire in the world, a lethal beauty with a path of devastation in her wake. Tasked with proposing an alliance between vampires and the lycans who killed her mate, Vash approaches Elijah, whose need to avenge a friend demands Vash's death even as his passion demands her surrender.

Soon, their enmity erodes beneath an all-consuming desire. Elijah has never encountered a woman whose warrior spirit and fierce sexual appetite rivals his own, while Vash is faced with the one man strong enough to be her equal. But as war looms, each must decide where their loyalty lies--with their own kind or with the enemy lover they can no longer live without.
Diving In...

As much as I liked the first book, I think I liked this one even more.  This one takes up right where Adrian and Lindsay left off.  I did read some reviews where readers thought that the ending of the first book was rushed and I have to disagree.  There wasn't really an ending, it's an ongoing story that picks back up with each book.

While this book is primarily Elijah and Vashti's story, there is still the main story going on as well.  They are still trying to determine who is behind what they are now calling "wraiths".  Someone or something is infecting minions with a disease that is running more rampant with each passing day.

When this book begins Elijah is dealing with the revolt of the Lycans against the Sentinels.  He is an Alpha who is essentially forced into a leadership position that he doesn't want simply because he is an Alpha.  He has been manipulated into the situation and while he isn't happy with it, he does his best to make things better for the Lycans instead of worse.

Vashti is sent to Elijah to work an alliance between the Vampires and Lycans.  They were both set up and they need to work together to find out who is behind it.  Vashti wants revenge against the Lycans because of the way her mate was killed years ago and Elijah wants avenge the death of his friend.  As they begin to work together they quickly begin to realize things aren't always as cut and dry as they appear.

One thing is for certain, the chemistry between them is undeniable.  The sparks fly from the time they meet in the first book and they just don't stop.  Vash has been alone for so long, she never wanted another man after her mate was killed and she certainly isn't prepared for the feelings that she has for this Lycan, someone who could well be connected to her mate's murderers.  Elijah has kept to himself for the most part.  His friendship with Lindsay is probably the closest he has been to anyone in years, so his feeling for Vash hit him like a bomb.  You can feel their connection though, and it's intense all throughout the book.

With the help of their teams they are able to discover more about the virus and they come even closer to discovering who is behind it.  Syre has a team working on it while Adrian has his team working on it as well. It's only a matter of time before they all figure out that they are going to have to put aside the past and combine forces to bring an end to it.  Adrian and Lindsay show up quite a bit in this book as their story progresses.  She is adjusting to the changes that she is going through and she is helping him to deal with guilt associated with Helena's death.

As this book ends it progresses right in to the next book which, I believe, will be focusing on Syre.  I really enjoyed learning more about him in this book and I am looking forward to see how his story goes.  And I know that since Vashti is Syre's 2nd in command we will be seeing more of her in the next book.  That means more of the yummy Elijah too!
