Synopsis:

Wanted: Lizzie Vaughan, Dead or Alive.
Relationships are always hard, but for a broke cowboy and a newly turned Vampire, true love may be lethal. After barely surviving an undead apocalypse in The Cowboy and the Vampire, Tucker and Lizzie hightail it back to quirky LonePine, Wyoming (population 438), to start a family. But she's got a growing thirst for blood and he's realizing that mortality ain't all it's cracked up to be when your girlfriend may live forever.
With a scheming Vampire nation hot on their boot heels and a price on her head, how far will Lizzie and Tucker go to protect their unlikely love? Blending evolution, religion and an overly sensitive cow dog named Rex, Blood and Whiskey drags the Vampire myth into the modern west, delivering double-barreled action, heart-pounding passion and wicked humor.
My Review
WOW!  I have to say right off that while I really enjoyed the first book in this series, The Cowboy and The Vampire, this one blew me away!  Where the first book covers a lot of the history of the vampires, the lore and all that, this one just jumps right in to the action and never stops.

All my favorite characters are back for this one, but the story starts off with an introduction to Lenny's niece Rose.  She finds herself in a bit of trouble in Oregon and Lenny and Tucker head off to save her.  They uncover a pretty distasteful situation in Plush, Oregon when they find her.  This situation ends up following them back to LonePine right smack dab in the middle of the "Astronomy Conference" that Lizzie has set up.  This is, of course, the public story for a meeting of all the big shot vampires.  They all have to make sure that Lizzie is, in fact, able to make new vampires thus ensuring her new role as the Vampire Queen.

I don't want to go into to much detail for fear of giving away crucial plot information. There is a lot going on in this book and a lot of things that will alter the course of Lizzie and Tuckers lives.  I was happy to see that Rex was still a major part of the story, he is still one of the best characters as far as I am concerned!  I have to say, though, that I really liked Lenny in this book. I think that he made Tucker sit and think for a bit about how he really feels about the woman who is having his child.  Tucker is still coming to terms with the fact that she's a vampire and while he knows that he loves her, he has an issue with the morality of how it is that she survives.  I think that we will continue to see him struggle with this as the series goes on.

I am anxious to see Elita continue to evolve as well.  I really didn't care for her in the first book, but she is growing on me and I think she is a crucial part of Lizzie's rule as Queen.  She's going to be the link that bridges the gap between her kind of vampire and Lizzie's.  I don't think it's going to be smooth going either, it will be interesting to see how that plays out.

I think that this book flowed smoother than the first one and I know it's because the whole book is written in 3rd person instead of the back and forth 1st person.  It was an easier read because of this and I don't think that we lost the individual "voices" of the characters in any way at all.  It was very well done.

I am super stoked for the next book, I can't wait to see what adventures these characters get up to next.  If you liked the first book you definitely need to run out and pick this one up.  If you haven't read it, then pick them both up!

Author Bios

Clark Hays grew up in Montana in the shadow of the Tobacco Root Mountains. In addition to his fiction work, he is a cowboy, a published poet and occasional food critic. Recently, he was nominated for Pushcart Prize for short fiction and not so recently for a Rhysling award for poetry.
