Synopsis from Goodreads:
Starting over sucks. When we moved to West Virginia right before my senior year, I'd pretty much resigned myself to thick accents, dodgy internet access, and a whole lot of boring.... until I spotted my hot neighbor, with his looming height and eerie green eyes. Things were looking up.
And then he opened his mouth.Daemon is infuriating. Arrogant. Stab-worthy. We do not get along. At all. But when a stranger attacks me and Daemon literally freezes time with a wave of his hand, well, something...unexpected happens. The hot alien living next door marks me.You heard me. Alien. Turns out Daemon and his sister have a galaxy of enemies wanting to steal their abilities, and Daemon's touch has me lit up like the Vegas Strip. The only way I'm getting out of this alive is by sticking close to Daemon until my alien mojo fades. If I don't kill him first, that is.
Diving In...
I realize that this book follows the YA "formula" that seems to be really popular these days. Girl moves to new town, meets "otherworldly" boy who just happens to be a hottie while she considers herself to be plain and ordinary. He treats her like a pariah at first, all the while you know that he really does like her. They seem to be on their own with no parents around to have any control over what they do so they seem more grown up, etc... BUT, this is the first Alien YA I have read, and I have to say that despite the similarities in theme to books like Twilight and Vampire Diaries, I really enjoyed it.
I think that Jennifer did a really good job building her world here. Her description of them in their true form is done excellently and I like that they have what essentially amounts to an opposite race that is hunting them. She does a really good job with the intense fight scenes and and even better job with the make-out scenes! There is no denying the chemistry between Daemon and Katy and I can't wait to see what the next book has in store for them.
There were also some very likable supporting characters. I especially liked Dee, but it's hard not to like a character like Dee! I actually liked Katy's mom. I didn't really think of her as an absent parent, I understood why she moved them to West Virginia and I also understand why she works the way she does. I do hope that we see a little more of her in the next books.
Overall, I really enjoyed the book. I think it was well written and I am excited for the next one. I think that anyone who likes YA paranormal will enjoy it.
Content Concerns:
*not much profanity, about what you usually see in a Mature YA
*Some nice steamy make-out scenes

ReplyDeleteSounds like a good book! I don't usually like alien novels, but I think I am going to give this a try. The cover is rather gorgeous, isn't it? I am a new follower. Would appreciate a follow in return: http://cozywritersden.blogspot.ca/
