Synopsis from Goodreads
In Last Breath, the rain brought a new and dire threat to Morganville and its vampires... their ancient enemies, the draug. Now, the vampires are fighting a losing war, and it will fall to the residents of the Glass House: Michael, Eve, Shane and Claire, to take the fight to an enemy who threatens to destroy the town, forever.Diving in...
Lovers of Morganville, rejoice: Black Dawn takes the intrigue, romance and nail-biting suspense of the series to its highest level yet!
I hesitate to try to review this book now, since I have read so many books since I finished it. I have been sick so I have spent a lot of time reading the past few days!
I have really enjoyed this series and I like that she has kept it going for so many books. They are quick reads and for the most part they have all been pretty good. That said, I didn't enjoy this one as much and I don't know why. It could be because I read it when I was coming off the high of reading a couple of really good books and it just wasn't as satisfying. Or it could be that the YA genre always seems to be lacking a little if you have been reading adult books.
While most of the time I like the switching of POV, I didn't like how she handled it in this book. Up to just a couple books ago she was telling the story from Claire's POV, then she started adding in just a snippet here and there of one of the others. I don't mind that, what I do mind is that when she is telling it from Claire's POV she is in 3rd person, but when she switches to one of the others it's always done in 1st person. I don't get why. Why not just keep it in 3rd person since she is labeling the chapters anyway? It's just a personal pet peeve, it doesn't necessarily take away from the book at all.
This book did seem to be action from the start to the finish and it moved pretty quickly, but it took almost to the middle of the book for me to become actively involved in it. I guess it just seems like these poor kids just never get a break and at this point I would just be leaving Morganville! Seriously, just pack up your stuff and leave it in the rearview. The vampires are pretty much just using them to help fight their battles so why bother?! I do really like Myrnin though, so I would have to take him along even with the added scare that he might try to eat me at some point!
Michael and Eve were able to work some stuff out. Shane and Claire are still going strong for the most part. I just don't know how much more these kids are going to be able to take. At this point I think it's time to give them a happy ending and start a new series as much as I hate to say it.
I say that if you have read all the others then by all means you need to read this one, but it's not a read over book for me.
Rating 6/10
