This was a very interesting story. Abby, a middle aged mother of 2, is the central character. She has just sent her husband and teenage daughter off on a weekend camping trip when a major storm hits the area where they were headed. Her husband and daughter disappear in the storm, where there is massive flooding and while they are presumed dead, things keep happening that make Abby think that maybe they are still alive.
One thing that I didn't like was the foreshadowing in the beginning of the book. It's only in the first few chapters, but it initially takes away from some of the suspense by giving things away. I also never fully connected to Abby, she just seemed so clueless and needy throughout most of the book. She wasn't really a particularly strong character. She did grow as the story progressed, but she was never fully sure of herself and that really bothered me. That said, I did like the relationship between Abby and Kate. It was one thing in the story that felt very real to me, especially once their whole history is revealed. I also really liked Dennis, although at times I didn't feel like he was doing his job the way he should.
I did like the story, I didn't expect the ending to be what it was. I felt like the whole time the story and the details were leading in a different direction and I was completely surprised at the eventual turnout. There were some inconsistencies in the story that bothered me, just small details that were thrown in, but never explained. The ending was kind of a letdown for me because of this.
This is one of those stories that makes you wonder what you would do if you ever found yourself in this situation. Overall, I did enjoy the story. It was a pretty quick read for me and while it was my first book by Barbara Taylor Sissel, I wouldn't hesitate to read another.
